Deep within the Amazon rainforest lives Curupira, one of Brazil's oldest and most beloved legends. With his bright red hair and feet that point backwards, he protects the forest and every creature that calls it home.
One of the most famous stories tells of a hunter who entered the forest determined to take far more animals than his family needed. As he followed fresh footprints, convinced they would lead him to easy prey, he unknowingly followed Curupira's backwards footprints. The deeper he walked, the more lost he became.
Hours turned into days. Strange whistles echoed through the trees, and every path seemed to lead back to where he had started. Realizing he had disrespected the forest, the hunter apologized and promised to take only what nature could give. Only then did Curupira allow him to find his way home.
For generations, this legend has reminded Brazilians that nature is not something to conquer, but something to protect.
